The Isle of Capri, Italy

Capri harbourHow much of an experience can you gain in just a few hours?

I probably had around 6 hours to fall in love with Capri and I only needed a few minutes.

I am not a huge fan of ranking experiences as we gain so many different things from each, but I will say that our day on the Isle of Capri was the highlight of our trip through Italy.

If you are a fan of picture perfect, chilled out coastal and insane beauty then Capri is the place for you. So much to explore on this tiny island, what we got was just a taste.

To describe Capri is pretty simple. It is what Mediterranean dreams are made of! The blue of the sky and of the water and the whites of the houses makes every scene look like a post card.

There are buses that take you around the island which will make you marvel at the skill of the driver as they meander around the bends travelling along the single lane road which happens to be the only road on Capri so it can get busy! Just remember to glance out the window as you get higher up, there are some pretty spectacular views you don’t want to miss.

capri 5The relaxed coastal vibe lends itself to a long lunch. This is one thing the Italians get right every time! A big bowl of pasta washed down with a bottle of red, this is what holidays supposed to be like.

A couple of must do activities that should definitely make their way onto your itinerary are the Blue Grotto and the Monte Solaro Chairlift.

The Blue Grotto was actually what lured us to the island in the first place! You lay down in a small boat which shoots you through a small opening into a cave where the light reflects in a way that the water is illuminated in the brightest blue. A ‘you have to see it for yourself’ wonder, and well worth it.

the blue grottoThe Chairlift was the other thing sitting at the top of my must do list. Single file, the chair lift takes you to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. With spectacular views from every direction it gives you a different perspective. The actual ride on the lift takes approximately 15 minutes each way, the higher you go, the better the views! There is plenty of room to sit around and have a drink and take in the beauty of your surroundings once at the top.

capri 3You can get to the Isle of Capri by Ferry either from Sorrento or Naples which makes it the perfect day trip.

Writing this I want to go back, but next time I will spend more time exploring the Amalfi Coast region. If you are heading to Italy soon and Capri isn’t on your itinerary, I’d change it…just sayin’.
