This year is already moving by so fast and I have suddenly found myself with no plans over the Easter break. While I was a bit down at first that I would not be getting away, I realised it was the perfect opportunity to get out and do some of the things close to home that I haven’t had time to do lately.
Have you heard of the term ‘staycation’? Well the prospect of changing my thoughts and making the most of my holiday time at home as if I was away, really resonated with me this time. So I started making a list of all the possibilities for weekend activities right here in Brisbane that won’t blow the weekly budget.
Here is my list of 10 cheap things to do in Brisbane on the weekend – I hope it inspires you to get out and explore over the weekend.
1. Explore Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens
While the weather’s still warm why not pack a lunch, grab some friends and head to Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens for a picnic on the grass? Explore the different areas of the gardens and relax, pondering how great it is that these gardens exist in the middle of the city.
2. Go On A Mini Road Trip
Jump in the car, fuel up, and go for a mini road trip. Drive somewhere you have never been before, head into the mountains or out into the country. Just remember, it’s not the destination, it’s the journey that counts so take your time and enjoy the changing scenery around you.
3. Visit South Bank
Get your culture fix at South Bank with GoMA and the Queensland Museum of Art before wandering down the river enjoying some good quality people watching and epic city views. Hang around until after the sun goes down to see the city really come to life.
4. Spend A Day At The Gold Coast
Drive south to the Gold Coast and don’t stop until you reach Coolangatta for a spectacular day at the beach. No trip is complete without sampling some of the amazing flavours at Gelato Messina and soaking in those relaxed coastal vibes.
5. Act Like A Tourist In Redcliffe
Spend the day in Redcliffe wandering through Bee Gees Way, window shopping in bayside boutiques and shielding your fish and chips from hungry seagulls along the water’s edge.
6. Eat, At Eat Street Markets
Set a budget and pay a visit to Eat Street Markets on Friday or Saturday night to enjoy some of Brisbane’s best street food.
7. Go Hiking In The Glass House Mountains
Head to the Glass House Mountains and get your weekly dose of exercise and amazing mountain views. The hike to the top might be challenging at times but the satisfaction of reaching the summit will give you a story to tell on Monday.
8. Discover Waterfalls In Nearby National Parks
Escape the daily hustle and go deep into one of the many national parks just a short drive away. Hike through the rainforest and marvel at natures beauty as you discover one of the spectacular waterfalls.
9. Wander Through Your Local Markets
Grab some breakfast and a coffee and spend the morning walking through your local markets. Take advantage of the local produce and stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables for the week.
10. Have A Netflix Marathon
Admit you have had a busy week and catch up with an epic Netflix marathon, because sometimes you just need to chill on the couch and that is perfectly ok!
