I am not going to lie to you. When I saw the trailer for this film I thought to myself, this looks terrible! What I didn’t expect after watching that trailer was the inspirational tale of determination and one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time.
Eddie The Eagle is inspired by the true story of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie, a very determined skier who in 1988 became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping.
Taron Egerton takes on the quirky and hilarious character of Eddie and provides one of the funniest performances, particularly in a biographical sports film, that I could ever have imagined. Hugh Jackman who plays Bronson Peary, a drunk American ex-jumper with a less than stellar past who reluctantly becomes Eddies coach, gives an easy performance that further proves that this guy can do anything! You get the feeling when the two are on screen together that they were really enjoying themselves and just having a good time.
The story follows Eddie from childhood, when all he dreamed about was becoming an Olympian. Over the years he became more determined despite many failures, as he sought to find a sport he would be good enough to compete in. Skiing became that sport, but after being denied his Olympic dream as a downhill skier by the British Olympic Committee, Eddie did not give up and turned to ski jumping without any prior experience.
This is a feel-good film about courage, determination and never giving up on your dreams. The story really highlights the fact that it really doesn’t matter if you win or if you lose, as long as you are trying your best!
Being a landscape lover I expected a movie about ski jumping to have some great snowy mountain scenery, and that is certainly the case. Most of the film is shot in Germany which allows for some spectacular sweeping views.
As I said, I haven’t laughed this much in a film in a very long time, and I think we can all benefit from a story about the triumph of the underdog. Expect to leave entertained and inspired.
Eddie The Eagle is released in Australian Cinemas on Thursday 21st April.
