Everyone has those moments when they are travelling that makes them question their booking decisions and choice of destinations. I had this experience the entire 4 days I was in LA. It was the last stop on a month long adventure through the USA and LA actually made me ready to go home from a trip I didn’t want to end.
Now I know lots of people who have been to LA and loved it, but what I am thinking must have happened is that they saw the side of LA that is reserved for the rich and famous because I certainly saw a different side of it.
My story begins with a bus trip from Las Vegas to LA. The actual bus trip was fine, what wasn’t, was the bus arriving later than expected and dropping us off in the middle of downtown at dusk. It was a pretty scary time to be waiting on the street for a taxi. It felt like the longest wait ever with a few other people, and of course ours was the last taxi to arrive!
When we did finally arrive at our hotel room, let’s just say I was underwhelmed. When booking a hotel if you haven’t been to a destination before it is always hard to know if you are booking in the right area. I booked in Hollywood thinking that had to be a nice area…our hotel looked like a hostel and the entire time I was sure the double lock on the door wouldn’t be enough. Our first night we had to walk a few hundred metres down the road to get to a Thai restaurant, I think we ran back as the streets where so dark with no one but the homeless around. That night we tried to fall asleep with what surely could only have been gun shots in the ‘I hope it is very far away’ distance!
Probably the funniest fail of the trip looking back now was getting distracted when walking down the Hollywood walk of fame and ending up looking around to see that the souvenir shops had changed to bikie tattoo parlours…Also staying around the Hollywood walk of fame after dark – that place empty’s out really quickly!
We left on a bit of a negative with a rookie mistake of not eating before going to the airport. My bad for thinking that LAX would have something for departing passengers. Food choice was Burger King or a bar where we did eat and had the worst fish tacos ever. It’s the worst airport, and now I understand why.
So this is basically a hate on LA but I count it as a travel fail as I this is the only place I have ever been where I can say without a doubt I have no desire to go again.
