This dairy free ranch dressing is perfect for all your favourite salads, wraps and sandwiches or simply for dunking. With a combination of both fresh and dried herbs, this tangy homemade ranch is incredibly simple to make and tastes so much better than anything store bought.
Ranch dressing is one of those flavours that hasn’t quite made its way into mainstream Australia but is commonplace in the US. I am not sure why it hasn’t translated here but I am here to give it a moment to shine and say that this homemade version deserves your attention because it’s really really good.
While we’re dunking our chips in garlic aioli, American’s are slathering theirs in ranch. So what exactly is it?
Ranch dressing is characterised by a tangy, creaminess usually from buttermilk, sour cream or mayo combined with herbs, garlic and onion and seasoned with salt and black pepper.
This recipe will show you just how simple it is to make this dairy free ranch dressing at home giving you a great alternative to jazz up your salads, sandwiches, wraps or simply for dunking veggies, chips or anything else really!
It’s fresh, creamy, and so full of flavour, you’re going to want to drizzle this over everything.
Key Ingredients
There are just a few key ingredients needed to ensure you get the best tasting homemade ranch with the flavour you expect, that is also completely free of dairy. You can also make a simple swap and keep this vegan as well!
- Mayonnaise – use your favourite here for a super creamy dressing. For a vegan option, use a vegan mayonnaise.
- Yoghurt – to keep this ranch dressing dairy free, I’m using a soy greek-style yoghurt which works perfect in this recipe. You could also use a plain coconut yoghurt here instead, or if you’re not needing this to be dairy free just use your favourite natural or Greek yoghurt.
- Dairy free milk – I like to use oat milk or soy milk.
- Lemon juice – ads that classic tang that you get with a traditional ranch as this dairy free version doesn’t contain buttermilk.
- Herbs – the key to ranch is the strong flavour of the herbs. I am using a combination of fresh and dried to get the best balance of ease and flavour.
- Garlic and onion powder – again this gives the ranch that key flavour.
- Salt and black pepper – it is essential to make sure your dressing is well seasoned.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Let me just start this by saying, I’m not sure you really need step by step instructions for this recipe because it is so simple.
Measure all of your ingredients into a bowl and mix it up, that’s pretty much all there is to it.
You can give it a taste and adjust your seasonings to your liking and add more dairy free milk if needed to get your desired consistency depending on if you’re planning on using it for dunking or drizzling.
You can serve it straight away or store it in a jar in the fridge for up to a week.
