This hot honey sweet potato beef bowl is a high-protein, flavour-packed meal inspired by the viral TikTok trend. With caramelised sweet potatoes, seasoned beef mince, cottage cheese, and a drizzle of hot honey to finish, it is the ultimate nourishing bowl for lunch or dinner.

Plus, this version uses my homemade dairy free cottage cheese to keep this recipe completely dairy free!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made this tonight and it was so good! I used standard cottage cheese, and also just the oven as I’m the only person in the world without an air fryer haha. Super tasty and very easy to make! – Bry

Ok so I am not usually the person to be publishing trendy and viral recipes, but ever since I saw this bowl on TikTok I just knew I had to make it. I mean it’s exactly the kind of food I like to eat and want to be eating more of. The only problem was being dairy free there is no store bought dairy free alternative for cottage cheese (which seems to appear in every viral recipe lately!).

Wanting to make this sweet potato bowl was the push I needed to try and make my own dairy free cottage cheese and the result it’s so good, I am very glad I did! All the flavours work so well in this bowl and it feels nourishing and healthy while still being really delicious.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe 💚

  • Sweet, spicy, and savoury flavours in every bite
  • Ready in under 30 minutes
  • High protein and perfect for meal prep
  • Naturally dairy free and gluten free

The sweetness of the hot honey really enhances the sweetness of the roasted sweet potato and the cottage cheese adds a creamy, coolness that cuts through the spiced beef mince. If you know who was the original creator of this bowl combination, then please let me know so I can credit them as it is definitely a winner and one that’s going to be on high rotation for me.

Key Ingredients

Like any good bowl recipe, this sweet potato beef bowl is all about preparing the individual ingredients that will then come together to make something super delicious.

All ingredients needed to make dairy free hot honey sweet potato beef bowls laid out.

Note all ingredients and their quantities are laid out in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Sweet potatoes – they get roasted to bring out their sweetness and form the base of the bowl. You can substitute with regular potatoes or my husband really wants me to make these with roasted pumpkin instead as he isn’t a fan of sweet potatoes.
  • Beef mince – you want to use lean or extra lean ground beef.
  • Taco seasoning – you’ll need 1 packet of store-bought taco seasoning to make this super easy, or you can make my homemade taco seasoning instead.
  • Dairy free cottage cheese – you’ll need to make this first using my recipe linked below as this isn’t a product that I’ve seen available at supermarkets. If you’re not dairy free, of course just use regular, or I have seen a lactose free version in supermarkets.
  • Avocado – you’ll use about ¼ of a large avocado per bowl, but you can use more if you like.
  • Hot honey – I am using a store-bought Australian hot honey to keep this recipe really simple. You can use any you like or try making your own.

Air fryer – While you don’t necessarily need an air fryer for this recipe, I think it makes it so much easier. I just upgraded to this one and it’s the perfect size when wanting to meal prep 4 serves.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Honestly, this is such a great recipe because it’s so simple to make each of the elements. Before you get started, I recommend making your dairy free cottage cheese and letting that sit in the fridge while you make the rest of the elements of this bowl.

Get started with the roasted sweet potatoes as they will take the longest to cook. Wash the sweet potatoes and peel them if you prefer – I usually don’t worry and just make sure to scrub off any dirt. Cut them into 2.5 cm (1-inch) cubes and add them to a bowl with some oil and a little of the taco seasoning, tossing well to coat.

I like to cook the sweet potatoes in the air fryer as they get crispy and caramelised on the outside and super soft on the inside, but I’ve also included oven instructions in the recipe card if you prefer.

Add the sweet potatoes to the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook at 200°C (400°F) for 20 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally to ensure even cooking.

While the sweet potatoes are cooking, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat and add the beef mince and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned.

Stir in the remaining taco seasoning along with a splash of water. Continue cooking until the mince is fully browned and any excess liquid has evaporated.

Assembling the bowls.

Now it’s time to assemble! For the meal prep instructions, see below, otherwise if you’re enjoying straight away add the sweet potatoes to your bowl, followed by some of the beef mince. Top each bowl with diced avocado, a scoop of the dairy free cottage cheese, and drizzle with hot honey to taste.

Now mix everything together so it looks a bit funky, and enjoy as you really want to get a bit of everything in each bite. You can add a little hot sauce as well if you want to level up the heat!

Meal Prep Instructions

I’ve been loving these hot honey sweet potato Beef bowls for meal prep! They’re packed with protein, healthy fats, and fibre, making them a great option for easy lunches or quick weeknight dinners. This is how I store and serve them for the best results.

Store the cooked sweet potatoes and beef mince in airtight meal prep containers for up to 4 days. Store the dairy free cottage cheese in a separate container in the fridge for up to 4 days as well. It may separate a little as it stores, but just give it a mix before serving.

As avocados brown quickly, it’s best to add it fresh when serving.

When ready to eat, heat the sweet potatoes and beef mince in a microwave-safe container for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring halfway through, until warmed through.

Once heated, top your bowl with some avocado, a scoop of the dairy free cottage cheese, and a drizzle of hot honey. Mix it all together and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

Can I cook the sweet potatoes in the oven instead of the air fryer?

Yes, of course. I like the air fryer as it speeds up the process a little but if you want to use the oven, preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F). Spread the sweet potatoes on a lined baking tray in a single layer. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and tender. Use in the bowls as directed.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

Yes! As long as you use a gluten free taco seasoning (or make your own), this recipe is completely gluten free.

What can I use instead of dairy free cottage cheese?

If the dairy free cottage cheese is still not your thing, you can use a dollop of unsweetened dairy free Greek-style yoghurt instead to give the bowl that creamy element.

How much is a serving size?

Divide each of the ingredients by 4. So you’ll have 125 grams of the beef per serve and 1/2 cup of the cottage cheese. The sweet potato amount will be based on the specific size of the sweet potatoes used.
