Air fryer crispy chickpeas are a tasty, delicious and super crunchy snack. Using the air fryer these simple snacks take just 15 minutes and are so much crispier than when made in the oven! These crispy roasted chickpeas are a great healthy snack to meal prep plus they are vegan and gluten free.

I love crispy chickpeas. In my opinion they are the perfect snack because they are super easy to prep, they have so much flavour thanks to the spice coating, but most importantly they have the most satisfying crunch.

The air fryer never fails to keep impressing me with how easy it is to make things go super crispy. When making crispy chickpeas in the oven, not only does it take much longer, but the end result can be uneven with some being crispy but others being chewy and some being burned. The air fryer solves this problem.

I love to prep these chickpeas and store them in the pantry in a jar so that I have something healthy on hand when my snacky self wants something savoury to get me through until the next meal.

However these crispy chickpeas are also amazing as a salad topper, adding that little bit of crunch and texture to your lunch.

And while this is my go to spice mix, get creative and adjust based on what you have and like.

Key Ingredients

These crispy roasted chickpeas are super simple to make, all you need really is a can of chickpeas and a well stocked spice rack!

All ingredients needed for crispy air fryer chickpeas laid out in bowls.

Note all ingredients and their quantities are laid out in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Chickpeas – canned chickpeas make this recipe so easy. Simply drain, rinse and pat dry and you’re ready to go!
  • Olive oil – we only need a little bit to ensure the spices stick to the chickpeas and help them go super crisp. You can also use avocado oil.
  • Spices – I love to use a combination of garlic powder, onion powder and paprika along with a good amount of salt as these are the spices that I always have in my pantry and I love the taste. There are many variations of paprika, each will give a slightly different taste but all work amazingly well. You can also add in a little cayenne pepper as well if you like things spicy!

Air fryer – It’s no surprise you’ll need an air fryer to make this recipe. This is the one I have which I love and use a lot! It is perfect for 2 people, but if you’re feeding a family look for an XL or XXL size.

Step-By-Step Instructions

For this recipe, you’ll need an air fryer. I have the Philips Essential L Compact which is a 4.1L capacity and is perfect for this quantity of chickpeas. If you want to double or even triple the batch, just ensure that when you cook them you only have a single layer in the basket of your air fryer when cooking.

Start by preparing your chickpeas. Drain and rinse the chickpeas and place onto a kitchen towel or paper towels to drain. Gently pat them dry with another paper towel. Unlike when cooking in the oven, you don’t need to be too pedantic about drying them, just get off as much moisture as possible.

Place the dry chickpeas in a bowl with the olive oil and the spices and give a good mix to combine, ensuring every chickpea is coated.

Preheat your air fryer or let it run for 2-3 minutes if it doesn’t have a preheat function like mine, and add your chickpeas to the basket.

Toss the chickpeas every 5 minutes to prevent the spices burning and ensure they cook evenly. I find 15 minutes total perfect for super crispy chickpeas (that will actually stay crispy when stored).

Give them a taste and adjust salt to taste if needed.

Recipe FAQs

How to best store crispy chickpeas?

I like to store these in a jar with the lid on in my pantry and it’s cool and dry. You want to avoid any moisture getting in which will soften them. If they do soften it may be that they weren’t initially cooked for long enough so you can always pop them back in the air fryer for a couple of minutes to crisp them up.

How long can I store these chickpeas?

These will store in the pantry for 5-7 days which makes them the ideal meal prep snack. Fair warning that they are addictive though so it’s unlikely they will last this long!

Notes

Optionally add some cayenne to the spice mix as well if you like a bit of heat!
Air fryer cooking times may vary depending on your make and model.
You can double or even triple the batch however depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook them in batches as we want to make sure the chickpeas are in a single layer in the air fryer basket for maximum crispness.
Shaking the basket often while cooking is essential for even cooking and to ensure the spices don’t burn.

Hi, this recipe looks amazing. How long would I need to cook for and at what temperature for a conventional fan forced oven? Thanks

Hi Teresa, I would do about 30 minutes at 200°C. For the best results in a conventional oven, really pat the chickpeas dry after rinsing as well.
