Plus they come together in less than 20 minutes with a few simple shortcuts to make assembling super easy!
Crostini is the perfect simple appetiser for Christmas or New Years. This version is inspired by the Stanley Tucci favourite sandwich combination of pesto, cheese and prosciutto, because let’s face it, that’s my favourite sandwich combination as well.
I mean honestly if it has prosciutto you know it’s going to be good. If you’re like me then you’ll also want to put this simple prosciutto pizza or this pear and prosciutto salad on your summer menus as well.
I recently found a dairy free camembert in my local supermarket so I thought these would be the perfect recipe to use it for as the soft cheese pairs wonderfully with the salty prosciutto and sweet balsamic glaze. Everything is then brought together with the fresh, nutty flavour of the basil pesto making each bite so full of flavour. You really cannot go wrong with this combination.

Key Ingredients
These prosciutto crostini are made to be super quick and easy to put together using a few store bought shortcuts so that you can spend more time with your guests and less time preparing the nibbles.
Note all ingredients and their quantities are laid out in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- French baguette – sliced and toasted to create the base of the crostini.
- Prosciutto – finely sliced prosciutto is the hero of this recipe.
- Dairy free camembert – you can use any soft cheese really for these crostini. I used the Imber’s Pantry brand dairy free camembert that is available at Woolworths, but the Unicorn Lactose free camembert is also a great option. You can also use a dairy free mozzarella, cream cheese, or use regular dairy brie or camembert if your diet allows.
- Basil pesto – use a dairy free, store bought basil pesto to keep things super easy or make a batch of my easy vegan basil pesto. Homemade definitely tastes better but you can’t go past store bought ease over the holidays.
- Balsamic glaze – while you can make a balsamic glaze at home by reducing balsamic vinegar, I find this is an unnecessary step when the store bought glaze is done for you, is inexpensive, and doesn’t leave your house smelling like vinegar. It’s also a great staple to keep on hand for salad season.
- Fresh basil leaves – if you don’t have them, just skip, but a few little fresh basil leaves adds the finishing touch to these crostini.
Step-By-Step Instructions
These prosciutto crostini are a really easy appetiser to put together quickly as guests arrive.
Start by slicing the baguette and placing it on a baking tray with a little olive oil. Toast them under the grill on both sides until golden brown.
While the baguette is toasting, you can assemble your ingredients and slice the camembert into thin wedges. You can also make the pesto if you’re making that from scratch.
Then it just comes down to assembling! Start with a little of the pesto on the toasted baguette slice, followed by a wedge of the camembert. Top with some of the thinly sliced prosciutto and finish with a few little fresh basil leaves and a drizzle of the balsamic glaze.
Repeat with all of the crostini and then place them on a large platter and you’re ready to serve!
🥂Serving Suggestion: Pair your prosciutto crostini with a sparking limoncello spritz for the perfect summer afternoon drinks and nibbles.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can substitute the baguette with gluten-free bread or crackers to make this recipe gluten-free.
Yes! You can toast the bread slices up to 24 hours in advance. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container. Assemble the crostini with toppings just before serving for the best results.
I don’t recommend storing the crostini assembled as the bread can become soggy. However, you can store any leftover toppings separately in the fridge and the toasted baguette slices in an airtight container.
